They continued to evolve in the later dynasties, and were used throughout Asia for extensive ocean voyages. The term junk may be used to cover many kinds of boat—ocean-going, cargo-carrying, pleasure boats, live-aboards. They vary greatly in size and there are significant regional variations in the type of rig, however they all employ fully battened sails.  ~ Wikipedia

This morning drive to the “floating” village of Kampong Phluk, home to some 3000 inhabitants. Flooded mangrove forests surround the area and are home to myriad wildlife, including crab-eating macaque! During the dry season when the lake is low (March through July), the buildings in the villages seem to soar atop their 6-meter stilts exposed by the lack of water. At this time of year many of the villagers move out onto the lake and build temporary houses. In the wet season when the water level rises (Aug to February), the villagers move back to their permanent houses on the floodplain, the stilts now hidden under the water. Kampong Phluk’s economy is, as one might expect, based in fishing, primary shrimp harvesting. Amidst the bustle of this busy community you’ll share in a delicious lunch before our return to the hotel. (Depending on the seasonal conditions, this trip may take place at a similar village, Chong Khneas). In the late afternoon, embark on “tuk-tuks” and ride to visit the lovely Preah Ang Chek Preah Ang Chorm shrine and the Angkor National Museum, an archaeological museum dedicated to the preservation and presentation of Angkor-era artifacts. This is the perfect setting to learn about the art and culture of Khmer civilization, surrounded by collections dating from the 9th to the 14th centuries. Continue your visit with a stop at Wat Preah Enkosei, a modern, working temple located riverside near the Angkor Conservation Center. Here you’ll take in the Preah Vihear (Monastic hall), a pleasant mustard-yellow hall with balustraded terraces set amidst ancient temples and stupas. You’ll witness monks perform a Water Blessing Ceremony, ensuring good luck and safe travels. You’ll spend the night in Siem Reap.
